Kollywood

Kollywood is the Tamil-language film industry, based in the Kodambakkam area of Chennai. It has a long history of technical innovation and of cinema entangled with politics. Several Tamil Nadu chief ministers came directly from the film industry, a relationship with few parallels anywhere.

Tamil cinema is known for strong composer-led musical traditions, and for directors willing to work across registers: hard social realism, genre thrillers, and large-scale commercial spectacle often from the same filmmakers.

Its films travel widely through the Tamil diaspora in Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Singapore and the Gulf, giving the industry an international audience independent of dubbing into other Indian languages.
