France holds a singular position in film history: the first public projection of moving pictures to a paying audience took place in Paris, and the country has treated cinema as an art form deserving public support ever since.

The French New Wave of the late 1950s and 1960s rewrote how films could be made (location shooting, natural light, jump cuts, improvised dialogue) and, just as consequentially, how they could be discussed. Auteur theory, the idea that a director is a film’s author, originated in French criticism before it became a global assumption.

A robust system of state funding and quotas has kept domestic production viable against Hollywood distribution, sustaining a national cinema that ranges from rigorous art film to broad popular comedy.
