How it got here

Japanese cinema has one of the deepest traditions in world film. Its postwar golden age produced directors whose formal choices (long takes, static low camera positions, elliptical editing) directly shaped how film is taught and made internationally. The jidaigeki, or period drama, gave the world the samurai film, whose structures were borrowed back by Hollywood westerns and science fiction. Alongside it developed a domestic tradition of quiet, closely observed family drama. Animation is not a sideline here but a central pillar: Japanese animated features are among the most commercially and critically successful films the country produces, and have done more than any other national tradition to establish animation as a medium for adult narrative rather than a children’s genre.
