Overview
Set against the backdrop of the Jeju Uprising in 1948, 'Hallan' is a harrowing survival drama that revisits one of South Korea's most tragic historical massacres. The film follows Ah-jin, a young mother who is forced to flee into the snowy mountains with her daughter to escape the brutal, indiscriminate 'punitive expedition' carried out by government forces against the islanders. Amidst the chaos of the anti-communist campaign, Ah-jin fights a desperate battle for survival, highlighting the incredible resilience and strength of Jeju's women. Through her struggle to protect her child from both the elements and the violence of men, the film sheds light on a largely forgotten history and the enduring spirit of those who endured the unimaginable.
