M. T. Rao and Mary are two unemployed graduates from different religions—Hindu and Christian—who decide to pose as a married couple to satisfy a job requirement at a village school founded by the zamindar Gopalam. As they navigate their fake marriage, they face cultural clashes and romantic tension. Meanwhile, Gopalam and his wife are searching for their elder daughter, Mahalakshmi, who went missing years ago during a festival. An amateur detective, A. K. Raju, uncovers various clues that eventually lead to the revelation of Mary's true identity. The film is a landmark social comedy that addresses unemployment and communal harmony through humor and memorable music.
