How it got here

British cinema is defined by a productive tension between two traditions: heritage filmmaking, adapting the country’s literary canon into carefully mounted period drama, and a documentary-influenced social realism examining class and industrial decline. That realist strand runs from the "kitchen sink" films of the late 1950s through to contemporary directors who continue to make unsentimental films about work, welfare and community. Britain also functions as major production infrastructure for international film: studio capacity, visual effects houses and crews that serve productions financed elsewhere, which makes the industry larger in practice than its domestic output suggests.
